The Art of leading others comes from the Art of leading oneself
For those who wish to participate successfully in a challenging economic development, it is necessary to acquire a multi-faceted competence and a vital ability to act over and beyond national and cultural boundaries.
Challenging opportunities within Europe and elsewhere are accessible to professionally qualified people. To cope with the challenge, a successful education must therefore proceed from a wide frame of reference and be driven by globally thinking and acting professionals and scholars.
At the University of Kalmar, together with our international partners, we have secured these criteria. Furthermore the city of Kalmar constitutes a pleasant and culturally stimulating background.
This Master's Programme in Leadership and Management in International context is intended for those who are, or aspire to be, in leading positions within organisations and firms with international operations. It is designed for people with the aim of shaping their future and developing their skills in international business and strategic leadership.
Composition and Philosophy
A programme, not a course
Our Master's Programme in Leadership and Management in International Context reflects our time, our realities and our dreams. It reflects today's business and entrepreneurial problems and challenges. It meets the demands of societies at large, which have become information, learning, and competence-based societies. Our programme reflects the trend towards economic globalisation, towards multicultural alliances and partnerships, and towards internationalisation in the true meaning of the word. It is an entrepreneurial programme which we produce, not a series of courses we consume.

Arenas for learning
People's driving ambitions, aspirations and desires need a nourishing environment where learning can take place. Learning is not done simply by receiving, but by participating, by influencing and by creating. This Master's Programme searches continuously for new instructive forms that encourage individual growth and development. We believe that our pedagogical tools combine the genuinely authentic approaches with established "truths" together with the young, fresh, and creative visions. We create arenas for learning, laboratories for experimentation, and an enriching environment in which to grow.
One Year's Process - a Lifelong Process
Lifelong learning is a leitmotiv throughout the Programme. The process begins on the first day and continues long after the Programme's completion. During this journey, the processes are made apparent, and the insights are recorded and implemented in practice. The learning process consists of many parallel and complementary forms: seminars, residential sessions, concrete projects, the Master's thesis as well as the individual mentorship.
Seminars
The seminars cover the relevant knowledge required for business, for management and for leadership in a complex and changing environment. This calls for a continual updating of the seminar's content. Primary emphasis is placed on business intelligence and strategic leadership.
Theme-guided Residential Sessions
During the Programme residential sessions are held where learning, intensity of experience and closeness reinforce one another. The participants play a prominent role in creating and implementing different tasks. This in turn is designed to enhance individual growth and "team building". We work with form and content, with practical knowledge and group dynamics.
Concrete Project-consulting
We turn away from the practices of traditional master's programmes where the students work hard to gain access to a firm's empirical data. Instead, we have established a frame in which the firms seek to gain access to the Programme's participants. In some cases, the participants can have access to a host firm where they might act as consultants. Significant projects are thus treated.
Master's Thesis
This is an independent authorship summarising the participant's achievements and learning. It is built on concrete projects and on the participant's abilities to use their theoretical and analytical skills.
Personal Development and Double-loop Mentorship
We believe that professional success goes hand in hand with self-actualisation and personal harmony. The participants receive guidance and inspiration from their individual mentors whilst they, simultaneously, also serve as mentors to others.
Personal Development and Entrepreneurship
Personal development is a key issue in the Programme and works as an on-going parallel process with the professional schooling. We participate, we create and we take responsibility for our own learning.
Integration and Experience-based Knowledge
The lectures and seminars are integrated in such a way as to bring out their meaningfulness and concrete relevance. We place a high premium on experience-based genuine knowledge and insight over more traditional or simulated forms of learning.
International Perspective and an International Team of Faculty
Our focus is powerfully directed towards international affairs in business and industry. This is facilitated by the very international character of the group of participants and by our international Faculty team, all of which are distinguished researchers and practitioners from well-known universities, institutes, and other organisations worldwide.
Multicultural Arena for Action Learning
The Master's Programme is based on the Action Learning pedagogy, where the participants evolve and work in a fully international environment. As members of multicultural teams they are given the opportunity and task, to manage diversity, throughout the programme, during the seminars, fieldwork and master's dissertation. The created diversity provides the participants with an arena where learning to manage others and oneself can take place.
